Overview

Our 5-week course will take you from the foundational concepts of data analytics to real-world implementation using the Microsoft Power BI visualization tool. We know your time is valuable, so we have structured the course to run two weekly sessions, each lasting 1.5 hours, on Mondays and Thursdays for a total of 15 hours of comprehensive training over 5 weeks.

  • Streamlining Data Gathering: Most analysts spend a significant amount of their time collecting, cleaning, and preparing data. This course will show you to automate data gathering, implement data governance strategies to ensure quality data, and safeguard your organization's future success.
  • Power BI: Gain a comprehensive understanding of this industry-leading data self service data visualization tool. Learn how to model your data effectively, a key skill for all self-service tools that enables you to report on multiple sources.
  • Create Visuals and Dashboards: Using Edward Tufte’s Visual Design principles, you will learn more effective ways to communicate your data’s story.
  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Balanced Scorecards: promote data-driven improvements in your organization, whether a university or any other type of business.
  • Power BI languages, SQL, and Python: provides strategies for learning M Query Language and DAX, Data Analysis Expression Language, two formula languages in Power BI that do not require programming. We show you how to use Power BI’s built-in tools for learning these by generating and reviewing solutions. Discover how ChatGPT can help you master these tools and languages.
  • Develop a Portfolio: Create your own portfolio to show off your data talent and attract the right career opportunities.  Explore datasets using creativity that will provide the insights you need to make the right business decisions.

About the instructor

Chester King 

Chester King has enjoyed a 35-year career in data analysis, software development, database design, and project management. He started out with the Harvard School of Public Health, managing databases for both operations and research, and then became a product manager for a report generator sold to system developers. He managed a 4-year project developing a Medical Lab system using agile development methods. He was a Senior Program Manager for the US Air Force on various development and analytical projects. He is passionate about data, its patterns, and how you prepare, manage, and use it.
