Spring Athletics Recap

It was a spring season to remember for Lasell's athletic programs.

The men’s volleyball and men’s lacrosse teams reached the GNAC championship game, baseball hosted a first-round playoff game, and women’s lacrosse made a late-season run to secure a postseason berth.

The men’s volleyball team earned wins over top-ranked Springfield and No. 5 Wentworth, while earning a No. 15 ranking in the National Volleyball Association/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Coaches poll. The victory over Springfield was the first in program history and the first time that the team has defeated the No. 1-ranked squad in the country.

Jordan Shinaut '25 became the first student-athlete in program history to earn All-American honors, as he was named to the NVA/AVCA honorable mention team. Brenden Joyce '23, Jesus Garcia '23, and Shinaut became the first-ever student-athletes with the men's volleyball program to earn AVCA All-Northeast Region team honors, while Shinaut also took home the AVCA's Northeast Region Newcomer of the Year accolade.

The men’s lacrosse team won 10 straight games from March 16–April 23, went 9-1 in the GNAC and earned the second seed in the conference tournament. James Anderson '22 recorded his 100th career goal in a quarterfinal-round playoff win over Saint Joseph (Conn.). The unit’s stellar defense held seven opponents to four or less goals. Alex Beauchemin '22 took home two GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week honors and Ryan Stone '25 was named Rookie of the Week twice.

The baseball team and went 11-7 in the GNAC and was led by All-Conference first team honoree Matthew Bischof '22. Bischof, who earned a Player of the Week award from the conference office, broke the program’s career and single-season, home-run records, as he finished his career with 12, including eight during his senior year. In his final season alone, he tied the program’s previous career home-run record.

The softball team had five student-athletes bat .310 or better and the group defeated Johnson & Wales, which eventually won the GNAC championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Brianna Gendreau '22 recorded her 100th career hit during a doubleheader at Elms.

Brady Mackechnie '25 of the men’s outdoor track & field team competed at the New England Championships, clocking a school record of 16.09 in the 110-meter hurdles. Riley Silvia '25 and Sinclair Samuels '24 placed first overall in the discus and shot put, respectively, for the women's track & field team during the 2022 GNAC Outdoor Championships.

In total, the Lasers had six All-Conference first team honorees, seven second team honorees, eight third team honorees and six All-Rookie team honorees during the spring season. Beauchemin was named Goalkeeper of the Year in the second consecutive season. Shinaut earned the conference’s Rookie of the Year honor and earned the Rookie of the Week award in each of the final seven weeks, and Mackechnie was named GNAC Rookie of the Year as well.
