2020 - 2021 Academic Catalog

Media saturate our world, impacting how we live and learn, work and play. Today's rapidly evolving media landscape demands professionals who have both the disciplinary knowledge and practical skills to communicate effectively and create content that informs, persuades, and entertains audiences. Lasell's Communication program prepares students for a wide range of media and communication careers through an academic experience that integrates media studies with experiential learning and professional development. Our program offers a major in Communication with six areas of concentration: Creative Advertising; Entertainment Media; Journalism and Media Writing; Public Relations; Radio and Video Production; and Sports Communication.  The program also offers minors in Advertising & Public Relations, Communication, Entertainment Media, Journalism, Public Relations, Radio & Broadcasting, Sports Communication and Video Production.

Consistent with Lasell's Connected Learning educational philosophy, students have numerous opportunities in and out of class to interact with professionals, develop projects and gain resume-building skills. Our on-campus production facilities and award-winning student-led media outlets include Lasell's WLAS streaming and FM radio station, 1851 Chronicle digital and print newspaper, multi-camera TV studio, video post-production lab, LCTV television group, and Polished and Tarnished magazines.  Students also work out of the studios of NewTV, Newton's community-access cable television located near campus.

All Communication majors complete a required internship, and Lasell is ideally located for internship opportunities at some of the most prestigious media outlets and organizations in the country, such as NBC Sports Boston, Fidelity Investments, Arnold Worldwide advertising agency, Staples, Inc., Boston Celtics, Gatehouse Media, WHDH (ABC affiliate) and NESN. Students gain valuable professional experience and significant contacts through internships and professional mentoring within the communication industry.

Upon graduation, our students are well-prepared to pursue careers in an exciting range of communication fields. Our growing network of alumni work in public relations, social media marketing, journalism, television and radio production, digital media, sports, advertising,  entertainment, and more.  Graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication (with a concentration of their choice).

By planning early in consultation with an academic advisor, students may be able to complete a bachelor's degree in Communication in as little as three years. Students may also take advantage of our Fifth Year Option, which enables them to earn both their undergraduate and graduate degrees in as little as five years. The Communication Program offers a Master of Science with six areas of concentration: Digital Media, Health Communication, Integrated Marketing Communication, Negotiations & Conflict Resolution, Public Relations and Public Speaking. The Graduate Program is described elsewhere in the catalog.
