Georgia Stamatos Critsley '42

1942
Georgia Stamatos Critsley (pictured above) passed away on October 23, 2020, at the age of 99, according to her daughter Georgia Katherine Critsley. She was a proud graduate of the Class of 1942 and was an enthusiastic member of the Glee Club and the Orphean Club. She had a beautiful voice and retained a love of singing for the rest of her life. In 1945, Georgia married U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Anthony Critsley. Georgia and her husband moved around the country, living in Virginia, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and New York. They finally returned to Boston, where they opened their own business, the House of Leslie, a jewelry and gift store that served generations of Bostonians. Georgia and her husband raised two children; her daughter attributes her mother’s strength of character and love of life, in part, to her education and experiences at Lasell. Her sister Doris Stamatos Conomos ’46 passed away on November 25, 2020.

Constance Courtois Gillen '42Constance Courtois Gillen (pictured above) died on October 16, 2021. According to her daughter Pamela, Connie joined the U.S. Navy after graduating from Lasell and served at the Naval Air Station in DeLand, Florida, where she met her husband. After raising five children, she became a full-time elementary school teacher for 20 years. Writes Pam, “She was so proud to serve in World War II as were so many other Lasell women who enlisted as soon as they turned 20 and received their parents’ approval.”

Doris Stamatos Conomos '46Doris Stamatos Conomos passed away on November 25, 2020, at the age of 94, according to her daughter Margaret. While Doris was a day student at Lasell, she worked part time at her father Nicholas’ grocery store, Stamatos Brothers Market, at 1679 Washington St. in Boston. She spoke fondly of her days at Lasell and enjoyed her classes and activities, including archery and duckpin bowling. Doris recalled poet Robert Frost’s visit to campus. She and her husband, the Rev. George Nicholas Economos, a Greek Orthodox priest, served six communities across the country. Doris assisted in each parish community, including teaching both Sunday School and Greek school. She also raised four children, and when her youngest started elementary school, Doris became a teacher in the Jersey City Public Schools. Doris was the first woman in her family to earn a bachelor’s degree and later went on to receive a master’s. Her sister Georgia Stamatos Critsley ’42 passed away on October 23, 2020.

Bobbie Jennings (Class Secretary)

The fall 2021 issue of Leaves, which featured Lasell’s Victorian houses, prompted memories from some of their residents from the Class of 1955.

Sally Warner O’Such loved her days in Gardner and the close friends she made there. She recalls some boys from either Boston University or Boston College made a “panty raid” one night, which was not uncommon in those days. She doesn’t remember how the “intruders” got in, but she thinks they were successful. Bobbie Jennings vaguely recalls a pair of panties flying on Lasell’s flag pole the next day.

Lois Kuhn Hopson, who lived in Carpenter, has a memory that everyone shares no matter where they lived: The room designated as the “smoker” — usually in the basement or kitchen of the houses. Students congregated there as often as possible, learning to play bridge, singing, and (sadly) smoking far too many cigarettes.

Bobbie Jennings remembers when she and Gardner roommate Nancy “Goodie” Goodman Cobin discovered some notes from previous students (and maybe the owners before Lasell bought the house?) stuffed in the chimney of the fireplace in their ground-level room. Obviously, the fireplace had not been used since the purchase. And, yes, Bobbie and Goodie added a note for future residents. Bobbie also notes the passing of classmates Carol Ann Cunningham Kiley and Mary Waterman Weaving, both of whom were active with the Workshop Players as students. Writes Bobbie, “We all share the amazement that Lasell has gone from a junior college in our day to its present status as Lasell University. We are so proud of our school — and grateful that we were there!”

Audrey Silver Rogers P’78 commented that her senior house, Draper, was not pictured in the Leaves photo spread, and wonders whether it is still there. There were 11 women who lived in the house — and Audrey can still name all of them! Miss Watt was the house mother, and class members remember her as the fun-loving physical education instructor.

Mary Lee Klipper Singer remembers living in Bragdon as a freshman and serving as the president of McClelland House as a senior.

She writes, “Things are opening up and we are enjoying the activities. I would love to get together with any Lasell alumni in the area.”

Judy Muncaster was quite surprised to see a photo of herself and her Carpenter Hall housemates in the fall 2021 issue of Leaves. She volunteers at the Humane Society and particularly enjoys working in the cat house, where she adopted her cats. On her frequent walks, she takes pictures on her smartphone and sends them to a local television station (example pictured above). She writes, “A few of these photos have been shown during the weather report with the caption, ‘Photo by Judy Muncaster.’ I am beginning to think I missed my calling.”

Carol and Bette Stubbe Carcano, who was Gail’s roommate during their senior year, both lived in Colorado and liked to ski together. Gail is staying active in Bonita Springs, Florida. She writes, “I would rather be on the beach than sitting at home! Even my license plate reads BCH BURD!”

Class of 1965 Nursing Grads on a Zoom Call

Nursing Graduates: Class of 1965

Since the onset of the pandemic, nine graduates of Lasell’s nursing program have come together for regular group Zoom calls. Writes Susan Miller-Havens, “We were only 18 years old when we arrived at Lasell and were somewhat wet behind the ears, to say the least. A bond was formed partly because we were fearful, but more because we loved what we were learning and we came to love each other. The experiences we had together were so memorable that we still keep talking and laughing about them.” The nursing program was led by Constance Milner, who instilled in her students a commitment to excellence in practice and compassion for patients. For the first two years of the three-year program, members of the Class of 1965 recall waking up early in the morning and riding a creaky, old school bus to Peter Bent Brigham Hospital for their studies. In their last year, they lived in Boston and did three-month rotations at Boston medical facilities. Among the stories the alums enjoy retelling is the tale of the inadvertent “washing” of a stethoscope. As the story goes, a classmate accidentally submersed the stethoscope in water. Their instructor was perplexed and thought their classmate was a bit deaf when she could not detect the patient’s heartbeat with the water-logged instrument! Some of the stories have the flavor of a MASH unit, and the group hopes to share a few more in the next issue of Leaves. Pictured above from left to right during one of the group’s Zoom calls: Top row, Debbie Werner Forbes, Susan, and Joan Snipes Bigelow; middle row, Pat Haggerty Fowler, Marsha Graziano Ballantyne, and Dee Dee Hanley McGrath; and bottom row, Sara Jane Osborne, Elsa Hernberg Akui, and Betsy Daigneau Marshall.

Mary writes, “Thank heavens for Zoom calls with family in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Kansas.”

She also taught at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, where she met her husband, Michael, who was on active duty with the U.S. Air Force. Bette and Michael split their time between Portland, Maine, and Sparks, Nevada.

Joy Fletcher Buckley writes, “For something to do during the pandemic, I decided to try hiking to get outside and meet new people. I joined a group that hikes a couple of days a week and enjoyed it so much that in 2021 my husband and I totaled 625 miles in the parks of Tennessee!”

Their children live in NYC and San Francisco. She writes, “Nursing has given me the opportunity to work abroad and use my Lasell education in a variety of roles. It’s been wonderful staying in touch with some of my Lasell classmates over the years!”
