Seizing Opportunity: How Lasell's Surgical Technology Program Helped Tyler Geoffrion Thrive in the OR
Tyler was a perioperative core tech at UMass Memorial Medical Center - Hahnemann Campus in Worcester, MA when he saw a flyer on the breakroom wall about the Surgical Technology certification program. Others encouraged him to take part, and soon he was enrolled.
“My professors were great at communicating. If I misinterpreted something, I had a direct line to my professor and could get feedback and clarification quickly if we weren’t in a live lecture,” said Tyler.
“My instructor always asked if we needed extra time to practice and stayed late on his own time. This help me with technical skills like proper draping and protecting your hands to avoid contamination. All of this made me more efficient and confident on the job.”
Supportive faculty were just one benefit. “The accelerated pace prepared me for surgery. The OR is fast-paced – and fast-paced learning helped me adapt. Also, studying various procedures and anatomy helped me anticipate surgical needs and positioning which gave me so much more confidence.”
