Remembering Retired Professor Rick Frederics

Retired Professor Rick Frederics

Rick Frederics’ former students and colleagues remembered him as an outstanding educator who embodied Lasell’s commitment to providing each student with an individualized learning experience.

Rick, who taught at Lasell from 1996 until his retirement in 2015 and served as chair of the accounting department for 15 years, died on Aug. 24 after a seven-year battle with multiple myeloma. He was 73.

“I can’t imagine what path my life would have taken had I not had the opportunity to learn from him,”  Molly Merchant Sandlin ’04, president of CAET Construction in Keller, Texas, wrote on the Lasell alumni and friends Facebook page. “He loved his family and his students dearly. We have exchanged Christmas cards every year since I graduated in 2004.”

Wrote Stacy Rawson Sheldon ’98, owner of Dreams and Fairy Tales Travels in Ashby, Massachusetts, “He was truly one of a kind — not only an amazing professor but an all-around amazing human being. I have thought of him fondly over the years.”

Longtime communications professor Janice Barrett called Rick “one of the kindest, most considerate, and thoughtful colleagues” she has ever worked with and recalled advice he gave her when she joined the Lasell faculty 16 years ago: “Take care of your students — nurture them, support them, mentor them, and help them become the best they are capable of becoming.”

Before joining the Lasell faculty,  Rick was an accountant and auditor for 25 years at Coopers & Lybrand, Multibank, and Bank of Boston.

He leaves his wife of 51 years, Sarah; two daughters; three grandchildren; and his father.

Remembering Marsha Singer Marshall '58

Marsha Singer Marshall '58 with her husband, Richard.

No matter what she did – parenting, working, volunteering, traveling, or making award-winning barbecue – Marsha Singer Marshall ’58 put all of her 4 feet, 10 inches into the task.

And her husband of 59 years, Richard, generally was at her side.

“She was absolutely committed to whatever she got involved in,” says her son, Steve. “It was never Mom or Dad, it was always Mom and Dad.”

Marsha, an active alumna and generous supporter of the Lasell Fund for many years, died on June 1  in Sun City Center, Florida. The longtime resident of Framingham, Massachusetts, was 83.

She kept in touch with her classmates, who she called “sisters.” “She loved making friends and keeping friends,” Steve says. “Once you became Mom’s friend, you were with her for eternity.”

When her children reached school age, Marsha joined Richard at Raytheon, where he was an electrical engineer for more than four decades. She worked as a secretary at the defense giant for 23 years.

During their active retirement, Marsha and Richard enjoyed camping, traveling around the United States, and entering barbecue competitions.

In addition to her son and daughter-in-law, she leaves two daughters and their husbands, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Her husband, who she met on a blind date as a Lasell senior, died in 2018.

Remembering Betsy Jane Curtis Winquist '48

Betsy Jane Curtis Winquist '48

Decades after they had graduated, Betsy Jane Curtis Winquist ’48 still sent cards to her Lasell friends on their birthdays.

“She was a very caring, thoughtful person and liked to stay in touch with her classmates,” says Nancy Curtis Grellier ’49, Betsy Jane’s sister. “Lasell was an important part of her life.”

Betsy Jane, an active alumna and consistent donor to the Lasell Fund, died on May 21 in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was 93.

After graduating from Lasell, she earned her teaching degree at Wheelock College. She began her teaching career in Connecticut and went on to work in schools in West Virginia, Virginia, and Wisconsin. She particularly enjoyed teaching in underserved communities.

Betsy Jane volunteered for many organizations, enjoyed spending time in nature and with her pets, and was devoted to her family.

In addition to her sister, she leaves four children and seven grandchildren.
