About the Instructor

Katy Dika has poured her love of patterns into her work as an in-house and freelance surface designer for over 17 years, creating artwork for brands such as Iris Apfel, Talbots, Coldwater Creek, and numerous others. In addition to creating original prints, she has spent a significant amount of her career purchasing surface design pieces for use in many product lines, giving her a unique perspective on the industry of both artist and buyer.  Katy enjoys teaching others about surface design via her courses at the Rhode Island School of Design, her private coaching practice, and now Lasell University. 



The curriculum consists of 2 courses with an estimated completion time of 14 weeks. 

Digital Surface Design I: Repeat Patterns in Adobe Illustrator
This course is designed to help students learn how to create repeated patterns using one of the most commonly used industry applications, Adobe Illustrator. Surface pattern design has many applications in fabrics, wallpaper, ceramics, glass, tile, metal, fiberglass, and plastics.  

Over a 7-week time span, students will gain a firm foundation of the design principles relating to textile/surface design and the tools used to create them. They will learn a variety of technical skills including using Illustrator to create motifs, seamless repeat designs, different repeat styles as well as the advantages of using vector images. 

Digital Surface Design II: Repeat Patterns in Adobe Photoshop
This course is designed to help students learn how to create Repeated patterns using one of the most commonly used industry applications, Adobe Photoshop. Using traditional techniques with computer-aided design students learn how to apply their artwork as surface pattern designs to everyday lifestyle products.

Course Content Structure:  Over a 7-week timespan, Photoshop will be used as the primary tool for integrating initial hand-created designs into repeating patterns that are industry-ready. In addition layout design, color development finishing and professional presentation techniques are covered. Students will create product design-driven, portfolio-ready projects. Allowing them to present their artwork in a way that is ready for the marketplace expanding their marketability as an artist or designer.


The Adobe Illustrator Certificate and the Adobe Photoshop Certificate are each $595.  It takes just 10 minutes to register online.  Admission documents are not required.
