- Holds an A.B. degree in History and Literature from Harvard University
- Holds an M.A. degree in Education from Ohio State University
- Completed coursework toward his doctorate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education
- Lives in Massachusetts with his wife of 46 years, Mary Barbara Alexander, an actress, activist and zoologist
- The couple has one daughter, Maggie, who lives and works in Florida
