Emily Huynh, Studying Abroad in Thailand

Psychology major Emily Huynh '19 is spending her spring semester at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand - an opportunity that offers her first-hand exposure to new customs and perspectives.

Huynh, who is originally from Connecticut, decided to study abroad to learn more about a different culture and language. As a part of her course load at Mahidol, she's taking classes that explore Thai language, culture, and poverty in Southeast Asia.

"I believe that you grow the most as a person when you step outside your comfort zone," said Huynh. "By studying abroad ... I am also able to see myself in a completely different environment, which allows me to see myself in ways I never have before."

Huynh was connected with another Mahidol student - who is now one of her closest friends - through the university's international buddy program. This relationship has reaped great rewards, and Huynh's new friend has helped her learn to speak Thai and to better understand local customs.

In all, Lasell students participate in more than 75 study abroad programs in 40 countries, an opportunity that exposes undergraduates to different cultures and new world perspectives. For Huynh, her semester so far has more than lived up to her expectations.

"I would absolutely recommend the Thailand program to other students," she said. "There are so many beautiful sights to see ... ranging from mountains, national parks, lakes, and the most gorgeous beaches. By ... experiencing what it's like to live here for three months, you will be able to compare the culture and society to your own and provide you with a lens to reflect on your own life."
