RUNWAY 2022: Reimagined

Lasell University’s School of Fashion hosted its annual runway shows last weekend featuring more than 70 student designers and 150 production personnel. RUNWAY 2022: Reimagined was held in the Lasell Athletic Center, which is transformed each year into an industry-level runway setup. This marked the first year since 2019 that RUNWAY was held fully in-person, though the show was also made available virtually through a livestream.

Both shows were produced by a student team led by production assistant Madison Whiteley ’22 and senior co-directors Madison Cormier ’22 and Karina Fernandes ’22, all fashion and retail merchandising majors. Their leadership team supported a student cohort of scene managers, models, backstage crew members, front-of-house personnel, dressers, videographers, photographers, and promotional staff.

“Putting on four shows in two nights (live and virtual) was no small feat,” says Cormier. “It was important for us to run a show that aligned with the fashion industry while still allowing room for our team’s creativity. As a director, I wanted to make sure that the fashion designers were showcased in the best way possible.”

On May 6, undergraduate student designers showcased their work in ten distinct categories: sweater knits, swimwear, athleisure, menswear, lifestyle separates, evening wear, tailoring, cocktail, special occasion, and non-textile.

The following evening featured Lasell’s senior fashion design and production majors, who each presented a full clothing line that was conceptualized and developed over the course of the year. Those collections included: “Drudgery” by Brian Ryker Allen; “Gigi” by Emma Murray; “Changeling” by Aster Kallman; “Ravishing” by Liliana Undavia; “Staccato” by Elise Stanbury; “Ba-Djuda” by Catheleen Viega; “Vintique” by Kayliani Rodriguez; “A Beautiful ‘D’isaster” by Darian Morgan; “Ghettoure” by Andrea Sims; “Imperfeições” by Jaqueline Cordeiro; “Pasarela Del Encanto” by Wendelyn Hidalgo; “Egregore” by Nicolas Brown; “Eden” by Sara Lano; “Resurgence” by Kerrie Bennett; “Mythical Madness” by Madison Wantman; and “Open Heart” by Daphne Wallace Murphy.

“The level of communication, organization, and passion it took to put on these shows was something that couldn’t just be taught,” says Cormier. “We had to experience the process for ourselves, which has definitely prepared us for our careers.”
