Lasell College to Offer New Master's Degree in Sport Management

President Michael B. Alexander has announced the approval of a new Master of Science degree in Sport Management to be offered by Lasell College starting in September 2010. The Lasell Board of Trustees unanimously approved the new degree program on October 26.

The approval of the new master's degree is part of Lasell College's Strategic Plan to offer four new graduate-level programs by 2012. Sport Management is the second of these new degrees to complete the approval process. Lasell's M.S. in Communication degree began in Spring 2009. The M.S. in Sport Management is designed to meet COSMA (Commission on Sport Management Accreditation) requirements.

"This new graduate degree is an important component of Lasell's Strategic Plan and will build upon the current undergraduate offerings in Sport Managementat Lasell. Graduates of the program will be able to take advantage of growing opportunities in sports retail and event venues in the area, such as Patriot Place," said President Alexander.

The new degree program is geared toward those looking for a career in sport management , combining courses in management, leadership and marketing. The College's Master of Science in Sport Management will offer:

* online/ hybrid courses, with concentrations in Sport Leadership, Sport Hospitality, or Non-profit Sport Leadership,
* is 12 courses (36 credits), built around a seven-course core curriculum, providing a solid foundation in sport management,
* includes a capstone experience consisting of an internship or thesis.

The program will also provide a unique opportunity for Lasell Hospitality and Event Management undergraduate students to pursue the College's 5th Year Option and earn a MS in Sport Management.

"The sport business is a multi-billion dollar industry that requires individuals with exceptional leadership, management and decision-making abilities," said Dr. Robert Prior, Chair/Associate Professor of Sport Management for Lasell College. "In today's competitive job market, this program will provide students with the qualifications, knowledge and essential skills for a successful career in the sports industry."
