Lasell Inducts First Chapter of Delta Mu Delta

April 21, 2017

Lasell's First Chapter of Delta Mu Delta

Lasell College inducted its first members into Xi Upsilon, Lasell's chapter of Delta Mu Delta International Honor Society in Business, which recognizes and encourages academic excellence.

The formation of the chapter was initiated by Professor Melissa Varao, Ph.D., Department Chair for Marketing and Management and Program Director for Hospitality and Event Management, and Professor Nancy Waldron, Ph.D., after Lasell's Business Programs were accredited by ACBSP (Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs), a prestigious accreditation that is a requirement for approval by Delta Mu Delta. "An invitation to join the Delta Mu Delta chapter confirms that students have a proven track record of working hard," says Waldron, "It demonstrates that students have the knowledge and drive to succeed in a business career." Indeed, according to Varao, "Delta Mu Delta is a widely-recognized society in industries.  We know that if our students get a Delta Mu Delta designation and put it on their resumes, that it's going to be recognized anywhere they go and it's going to be recognized for what it's worth.  People know that means that these students are outstanding in their classes and are leaders amongst other students."

As members of Xi Upsilon, Lasell students will elect officers to determine what activities the chapter will be involved with, which may include service learning, charity work, and creating events on campus.  "We have formed Xi Upsilon so students can have the power to do what they want with the society on campus, and we will have some resources for them to do that," says Varao, "For example, as a group they could decide that they want to go to a panel discussion at Harvard Business School to learn about a particular topic, and this would be a great way for them to that. The idea is for students to continue to broaden their knowledge in their field at a higher level."

The first induction into Lasell's chapter of Delta Mu Delta took place on April 13, 2017.
