Lasell College to go Test Optional for Fall 2017 Admission

August 02, 2016

After careful deliberation, Lasell College has announced it will go "test-optional" beginning with applications for admission to the 2017 Fall semester. The College will no longer require prospective students to submit SAT or ACT scores. Lasell joins more than 850 colleges and universities nationwide that no longer use SAT/ACT scores to admit substantial numbers of students into Bachelor degree programs.

In announcing the decision, Lasell administrators cited research conducted over several years that showed high school curriculum and performance were stronger predictors of student success than SAT or ACT scores.

"The admission process has always followed a holistic approach to evaluating a student's application for admission, which emphasizes the scholastic record, student involvement, the essay and interview," said James Tweed, Assistant Vice-President for Enrollment Management/Dean of Undergraduate Admission and Financial Aid. "In fact, we have not used SAT and ACT scores for consideration of merit scholarships for quite some time."

This approach, combined with a recent change to the SAT format over the last year, making test score comparisons more challenging, made this the appropriate time to make the decision.

"This year was the ideal time to go test optional," said Tweed, who added that Lasell has experienced 18 years of record-breaking enrollment and admits a freshman class that exceeds 500 students.

The test optional change applies to all majors except Education and Athletic Training, which requires familiarity and proficiency with standardized testing in preparation for post-graduation licensure or professional certification. The test optional policy provides students applying to one of the College's other 40+ programs with the option to submit their scores if they choose. Students who believe their SAT or ACT scores may support their candidacy for admission are welcome to submit them.
