Lasell Athletic Director Wins GNAC Honor

August 15, 2013

Lasell College Director of Athletics Kristy Walter was recently named Executive of the Year for 2012-13 by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference following a vote by the conference's Athletic Directors.

Walter saw both the women's soccer team and women's lacrosse team capture GNAC Championships for Lasell, with the women's soccer team capturing its first NCAA tournament victory in the school's history with a 3-1 defeat of nationally ranked Amherst College in the first round.

The Lasers also added a pair of sports to their offerings during the 2012-13 year, starting men's and women's track and field programs to bolster the number of sports available to Lasell students to 17.

Walter has held the Director of Athletics position at Lasell since its creation in 1992, and has shepherded the department through a variety of changes over the last 20 years. She guided the Lasers through the transition to NCAA Division III membership in 1995 and oversaw the department's growth when Lasell added men's sports in 1998 when male students were first admitted.

Walter also helped the Lasers transition to the GNAC in 2007, a move that has helped Lasell compete for postseason appearances and in conference championships.

"I am honored to be selected by my GNAC peers for this award and I look forward to Lasell's continued association with the GNAC," said Walter.

Past winners of the award, which debuted in 2008, include Anthony Mariano of Norwich University, Joanne Merril of Rivier University, Jim Nelson of Suffolk University, John Parente of Johnson and Wales University, and Brian Curtin of St. Joseph's College of Maine.

The GNAC honor was the second major recognition in the last eight years for Walter, who was recognized by the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2005 as the organizations "Female Administrator of the Year".
