The Power of Five

January 02, 2018

Starting on January 16, Lasell College will reopen for the spring semester with the launch of a new five-school structure to house the college's academic programs.

The establishment of the five schools - Business, Communication & the Arts, Fashion, Health Sciences, and Social Sciences, Humanities & Education - comes as a result of a larger restructuring within Lasell's Academic Affairs office. According to James Ostrow, vice president of academic affairs, there will be ongoing evaluation of the new structure throughout the spring semester to ensure that the changes are a positive reflection of the college's mission and strategic goals.

"I believe that we have a wonderful opportunity with the creation of these five new schools," said Ostrow. "They will foster new kinds of interdisciplinary connections and continued collaboration across various offices on campus."

Ostrow also announced that each school will be led by an associate dean as the college moves away from its former structure, one where each academic department had run autonomously under the guidance of a department chair. The new structure will migrate those departments into one of five schools, led by the following faculty members: Melissa Varao, School of Business; Aaron Toffler, School of Communication & the Arts; Anne Trevenen, School of Fashion; Cristina Haverty, School of Health Sciences; and Lori Rosenthal, School of Social Sciences, Humanities & Education.

"The five faculty chosen to lead the schools as associate deans are passionate about interacting across disciplinary and department lines," said Ostrow. "They're all working in the interest of enriching the creative and intellectual growth of our students."
