Inclusive Learning in Action

More than 200 students presented work at the Lasell College Fall Connected Learning Symposium on December 4, with projects ranging from corporate collaborations to high-level research, visual and performance art, and live debates and negotiations. This semester's symposium was the first in the event's history to take on a theme - diversity, equity, and inclusion - as seen in more than half of the day's presentations.

"This symposium was a special one," said Jim Ostrow, vice president for academic affairs. "Students were poised, confident, and creative educators for our community. In praising student work, we also celebrate the superb work of our faculty."

He noted that the day's theme helped to further advance the College's approach to inclusivity as a "single, committed community."

The day's events included a professional business negotiation for the location of the 2032 Olympics, three interactive performances by Mass Transit Theater about difficult conversations on race and gender, an athletic training clinic, and performance art on topics including diversity, racism, unfair wages, and mental illness awareness.

An immersive experience, "The Race Card Project," asked community members to contribute their thoughts on race in just six words. The project is part of a larger initiative started by Michelle Norris, a Peabody Award-winning journalist and former host of NPR's "All Things Considered."

Poster and booth presentations examined topics including sustainable fashion design, media ethics, and crime theory. Classroom sessions offered a close look at student research in a multitude of areas, including but not limited to: shoe design to accommodate disabilities; corporate social responsibility; ethics of diversity and inclusion in criminal justice; intergenerational genealogy; and the ethical debate around U.S.-paid reparations to descendants of slaves.
