Fall Choice Deadline Extended; Intercollegiate Sports Updated
July 16, 2020
After careful consideration, Lasell University has decided that no Fall varsity teams or club sports will compete in intercollegiate competition during the Fall 2020 season.
Given this change, we are offering all students an additional week to confirm how they would like to pursue their Lasell education. As a reminder, students can attend as a residential or a commuter student with a mixture of in-person and online classes, or students can choose to take all classes online from a remote location. In order to make all the necessary arrangements, please make your final decision no later than Thursday, July 23.
The decision to cancel Fall intercollegiate athletics was made after a thorough review of NCAA Return-to-Play guidelines, state and local regulations, recommendations from the COVID 19 Task Force, and based on announcements from other collegiate leagues. This incredibly difficult decision is based on concerns for the health and safety of our athletes, coaches and staff, our ability to safely host visiting teams, the participation of other division schools, and challenges associated with travel to other campuses. We recognize how disappointing the impact of this decision is for all of our student-athletes, particularly for our seniors. We know that athletic participation is an important component of the experience at Lasell and we share in this disappointment.
In the coming weeks and months, we will evaluate if there is an opportunity for Fall sport athletes to compete in some capacity in the Spring. Our coaches and the athletic department will remain in close communication with our student-athletes regarding any updated information.
At this point in time, no decision has been made regarding Winter or Spring seasons, though Winter sports teams (men's and women's indoor track & field and men's and women's basketball) will not be competing during the Fall segment of their season.
We will continue to update information and welcome your questions about how COVID-19 will affect athletics and recreation at Lasell during the 2020-21 academic year.
Again, this is an extremely disappointing outcome for everyone involved and we look forward to when all Lasers can return to full competition.
