Assistant Director of Student Financial Planning

Situated in the lovely town of Newton MA, approximately 15 minutes from downtown Boston and 2 minutes from routes 95/128 and the MA Turnpike, Lasell College is a private college which enrolls approximately 1800 undergraduate and 350 graduate students. Lasell has a long standing tradition of providing excellent service to its students and the Office of Student Financial Planning is no exception. Reporting to the Director of Student Financial Planning, this position is responsible for a variety of student-related and managerial functions. It is responsible for assisting in the administration and coordination of the department, managing the daily operations of the office including hiring, training and supervising the student employment staff, the processing of all incoming and outgoing communication, electronic and hard copy, review and awarding of a caseload of student aid files, verification processes, serving as a departmental liaison to a variety of offices including athletics, study abroad, student activities, and counseling students and their families. In doing so, the assistant director exercises independent, professional judgment to carry out Lasell College's mission and policy to recruit and retain students and deliver the services of the department. The independent decisions made by the assistant director commit this office to a specific course of action, carry fiduciary responsibility and accountability for managing financial aid and verification processes and determine whether or not a student receives financial assistance to attend or continue attending the college.

Specific Duties:
Exercises independent judgment and authority to determine the administration of assigned programs. Determines how the department proceeds with the program, including how the program is run. Accountable for all aspects of the program, including assuring the federal/state/college laws, rules, regulations, policies are followed and not violated. Adjusts the parameters of the program as needed to meet the college's goals and missions. Acts as the department's representative and agent in all aspects of program responsibility and to be able to coordinate and administer any of the programs listed.

  • Manage review and awarding of caseload of financial aid files
  • Manage all state grant programs
  • Manage verification process for aid recipients requiring verification
  • Manage the hiring, training and supervision of all student employment staff for the department
  • Work with the department of Human Capital Management on the student employment program across campus, designing and deploying supervisor training, student and supervisor handbooks and being the contact for student employment related questions for the campus
  • Liaison with other departments including but not limited to Student Activities, Study Abroad, Athletics and Development
  • Manage the deployment and ongoing management of SALT, our financial literacy and debt management program

In managing the programs listed above, the incumbent must work collegially and foster good relationships with colleagues from all parts of the college including academic departments.

Student-Related Activities:

  • Counsel students and families about available financial aid, scholarships and general student eligibility criteria. Has authority to modify student eligibility and financial aid packages from initial analysis of need to packaging or changing of award, using independent, professional judgement in doing so
  • Develop programming supportive of student scholars
  • Monitor satisfactory academic progress, determining students continued eligibility for receipt of aid, making decisions and using judgement beyond routine policies and procedures
  • As a representative of Lasell College, the assistant director participates in college outreach activities, speaking to groups of parents, students, high school counselors, members of the community (local and state-wide), and members of various civic and professional organizations

Representing the college's interest, participates in state and national organizations to understand laws, policies, regulations and procedures that affect financial aid and scholarships and effectively recommending courses of action to be taken by this department.

The successful candidate must have a willingness to learn and the desire to relate effectively and efficiently with students, faculty, administration, staff and the public.

Desired requirements include:

-A Bachelor's Degree is required
-Minimum 1 year of experience working in a similar capacity within higher education
-Commitment to the highest level of customer service
-Attention to detail, effective technical, written and oral communication skills
-An enthusiasm for working in a team oriented environment but also able to work independently
-Occasional weekend and evening work required
-Experience using Microsoft Office suite and PowerFAIDS
-Strong organizational skills
