Full-Time Philosophy/Ethics Professor

The Junior Year Ethics Experience Program of Lasell’s Undergraduate Core Curriculum is seeking a Full-Time Assistant Professor to teach and coordinate the delivery of the Junior Ethics Experience (appointment at a more senior level may be considered, commensurate with experience). Lasell’s Core Curriculum focuses on combining career readiness and professional skill development, through a variety of cohort experiences, with a strong grounding in the liberal arts and a commitment to diversity, social justice, and inclusion.  Lasell’s ethics experience is grounded primarily in a course (PHIL302 – Ethical Reasoning), which familiarizes students with ethical theories.  The experience also encourages students to apply ethical reasoning not only to their daily lives and careers, but also to broader questions of social justice and community.  This cohort experience is therefore designed to engage third-year students deeply with the following aspects of life-long learning embedded in our Core Curriculum:  Civic & Community Engagement; Intercultural Knowledge & Effectiveness; and Moral & Ethical Reasoning.

As a teaching-centered university, Lasell’s typical course load is 4-4 but the Coordinator of the Junior Year Ethics Experience receives a course release in the fall semester to coordinate the team of faculty, both full and part-time, who teach the multiple sections of this course offered every semester.  This coordination includes professional development and regular meetings to ensure that the Ethics Experience is a common cohort one for the students.  Working closely with the Director of the Donahue Institute for Equity & Social Justice, the Coordinator assists in organizing co-curricular activities for the entire community, so as to guarantee that students in PHIL302 have opportunities to apply moral and ethical reasoning as they also develop their intercultural knowledge and effectiveness.

As a principal member of the Core Curriculum Steering Committee, the Ethics Experience Coordinator participates in conversations and contributes to the assessment and alignment of this cohort experience with the other Core Curriculum experiences, namely the First Year Seminar and the Sophomore Multidisciplinary Experience.  These three courses, along with a series of Knowledge Perspective courses and others, comprise the general education framework at Lasell.  Additionally, the Coordinator collaborates with the Dean of Curricular Integration and the Dean of the School of Humanities, Education, Justice & Social Sciences to develop the schedule of offerings and teaching assignments.  While primary responsibility lies in teaching PHIL302, there are opportunities to teach other courses.  The Philosophy/Ethics faculty member is also a member of the Humanities Program, which houses the English, Global Studies, and History majors.  In this role, the faculty member contributes to the well-being of that department and its students.

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Philosophy or a related field required; ABD or other terminal degree will be considered.
  • Experience in a student-centered teaching environment, as well as a passion for innovative, project-focused initiatives that utilize active, experiential pedagogy.  (Prior college teaching experience to diverse students is preferred.)
  • Productivity and currency in an academic discipline as well as commitment to the college community are priorities.
  • Proven ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse constituents including faculty, staff, students, community leaders and individuals of all backgrounds.
  • Clear commitment, given the three major learning outcomes of Lasell’s Core Curriculum, to community engagement, diversity, and advancing cultural and gender equity through ethical reasoning.
  • Ability to bring global and non-Western perspectives into the teaching of ethics.
  • Ability to work both within and beyond departments to shape the ongoing development of undergraduate and graduate programs; both the undergraduate and graduate programs are looking to enhance and diversify offerings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to contributing to an inclusive campus environment in which members from all backgrounds can thrive.
  • Passion for fostering an atmosphere of appreciation of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Interested candidates should upload a cover letter, a statement of teaching philosophy, and a curriculum vitae.
