Adjunct Faculty- Ethics/Philosophy

The Junior Year Ethics Experience Program in the School of Humanities, Education, Justice & Social Sciences is seeking one or two candidates to teach some of our open sections. This course is an integral part of Lasell's Core Curriculum, and is required of all juniors.

We are currently looking for 1-2 instructors to teach open sections of the course. The courses are scheduled as face-to-face, on campus classes so availability for the specific course times is essential. However, given the uncertain nature of the fall semester, instructors should be prepared to teach some or all of the semester hybrid or online and must be willing to accommodate both in-person and remote learners in the same section.

Course Times:
Monday and Wednesday 9:30 - 10:45
Monday and Wednesday 2:00 - 3:15

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide instruction for all sessions of assigned classes utilizing the common syllabus for the Junior Ethics Experience course and the college philosophy of Connected Learning.
  • Collaborate with faculty teaching other sections of the same course to ensure some degree of consistency across sections
  • Offer class meetings based on a common schedule, and share in the course-wide assignment preparation and grading.
  • Grade all course assignments in a timely and coordinated way with the other sections of the course. (sample assignments available)
  • Maintain a minimum of 1 office hour each week either on campus or through conference calling such as Zoom.
  • Incorporate Canvas (online learning platform) into the course (all assignments are turned in to you on Canvas).
  • Keep accurate records of student progress (grades), provide regular feedback to students, and complete mid-semester and final grade reports by registrar deadlines.

Qualifications:
A willingness to incorporate the college's Connected Learning Philosophy into the course as well as a master's degree in philosophy are required (doctoral degree preferred). Teaching experience in ethics (and critical thinking and/or logic) is a plus.

Course description:
PHIL 302 will address the interaction between the lives we lead and the application of traditional (and some nontraditional) ethical theories and principles to important decision points in our lives. Students will take on real-life ethical problems and dilemmas for each class; each student will be responsible for presenting a number of issues, as well as for guiding the discussion of those issues in class. The problems we address will largely span a lifetime of experiences and concerns. Students will also write several papers that evaluate formal arguments, using standard tools of critical thinking and philosophy. The course is discussion based, so a willingness to read carefully, to think critically, and to engage in classroom presentations and discussions is essential.
