Full Time Faculty - Ethics/ Coordinator of the Ethics Program

Nancy Lawson Donahue ’49 Professorship of Ethics & Coordinator of the Junior Year Ethics Experience: 

 

Lasell University offers a unique, required Junior level course in Ethical Reasoning as part of our Core Curriculum. We are seeking a Full-Time Assistant (or Associate) Professor to lead the delivery of the Ethical Reasoning course, which includes teaching sections of the course, recruiting and hiring qualified part-time faculty to teach several other sections, and to participate actively in the life of the Faculty and the University. Lasell’s Core Curriculum focuses on combining career readiness and professional skill development with a strong grounding in the liberal arts and a commitment to infusing diversity, social justice, and inclusion in the curriculum.

 

The Junior Ethics Experience combines a rigorous introduction to ethical reasoning and applied ethics using a variety of ethical theories from multiple global/traditional backgrounds. Students are encouraged to integrate the material of the course into their lives and experiences and to apply ethical reasoning to their future careers.

 

The Nancy Lawson Donahue ’49 Professor of Ethics/Coordinator of the Ethics Program is a full member of the Humanities Program, collaborates with the Dean of the School of Humanities, Education, Justice and Social Sciences and the Dean of Curricular Integration, as well as the Registrar to develop the schedule and teaching assignments for the Ethics Experience which includes hiring and providing faculty development/training. Opportunities exist to teach other courses based on individual area of expertise; openings arise to teach graduate level ethics courses, such as Health Care Ethics and Management Ethics. Other duties include serving on the Core Curriculum Steering Committee and cooperating actively with the Donahue Institute for Equity & Social Justice to organize co-curricular activities, conduct programmatic assessment, and ensure alignment with other courses in the Core Curriculum.

 

Lasell is a teaching-focused university. Faculty course load is 4-4. The Coordinator of the Junior Year Ethics Experience receives a course release in the fall semester to coordinate the team of faculty who teach the multiple sections of the course throughout the year to ensure a true cohort experience for the students.

 

Successful applicants will demonstrate passion for student-centered teaching and innovative, creative and rigorous application of the tools of ethical reasoning, utilizing an active, experiential approach with appropriate attention to the skills of argumentation, justification and evaluating objections. Productivity and currency in an academic discipline as well as commitment to the university community involvement are priorities.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Willingness to incorporate the university’s Connected Learning Philosophy into the course, as well as doctoral degree in philosophy or a related field are required. [TE1] Prior college teaching experience in Ethical Theory and/or Applied Ethics is essential.
  • Experience in a student-centered teaching environment and a passion for innovative, project-focused initiatives that utilize active, experiential pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated commitment to contributing collaboratively to an inclusive campus environment in which members from all backgrounds are equitably positioned to thrive.
  • Ability to work both within and beyond the department to shape the ongoing development of undergraduate and graduate programs; both the undergraduate and graduate programs are looking to enhance and diversify offerings.
