Writing Placement

At Lasell University, students in their first semester take a Writing I course. Students can choose either WRT 101 Writing I or WRT 101 Writing I Workshop

Writing I Course Descriptions:

WRT101 Writing I: In this course, students gain understanding of and confidence in strategies for effective writing by composing and reading in a variety of genres. The course emphasizes writing as a process and focuses on the rhetorical choices writers make. Students engage critically with sources by examining how genre, context, purpose, credibility, and bias work together to create meaning and impact audiences.

WRT101 Writing I Workshop:In this course, students gain understanding of and confidence in strategies for effective writing by composing and reading in a variety of genres. The course emphasizes writing as a process and focuses on the rhetorical choices writers make. Students engage critically with sources by examining how genre, context, purpose, credibility, and bias work together to create meaning and impact audiences. Students are provided with time during class to work on their writing while the instructor and a writing tutor are present to provide assistance.

What is the difference between WRT 101 Writing I and WRT 101 Writing I Workshop?
Both courses have the same requirements for the number, length, and type of assignments. WRT 101 Writing I Workshop meets for an extended amount of time so that students have the opportunity to work on their writing with the instructor and a peer writing consultant present to answer questions, read over material, and offer suggestions.

What are the benefits of taking WRT 101 Writing I Workshop?
WRT 101 Writing I Workshop was created based on feedback from Lasell University students as a way to make the writing process less stressful and more enjoyable. The amount of work that is required for WRT 101 Writing I and WRT 101 Writing I Workshop is the same, but in WRT 101 Writing I Workshop more time is spent during class to assist students with written assignments. Students are able work on their writing during class with real time support from the writing instructor and peer writing consultant thereby reducing the amount of out of class time on assignments
