There are various ways in which study abroad can be funded. It is important to explore the opportunities offered by the study abroad programs themselves in addition to the numerous external scholarship opportunities. Deadlines for scholarships can be up to a year in advance of the program start date making it critical to be researching, planning, and applying early.
The following lists of scholarship opportunities are not exhaustive.
The Gilman Scholarship
This scholarship open to U.S. citizen undergraduates who receive a Federal Pell Grant or will be receiving a Pell Grant. Over 2,900 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year. The program aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to students with high financial need, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities.
Fund for Education Abroad
This scholarship is open to anyone and offers a variety of scholarships for study abroad students, including dedicated scholarships for students in the Boston area, scholarships for athletes, and scholarships for LGBTQ students.FEA awards scholarships of up to $10,000 for students who plan to study abroad for a full academic year; $5,000 for students who plan to study abroad during the fall or spring semester; and awards that are prorated by number of weeks in-country (with a minimum of $1,250) for students studying abroad during summer. Applicants must meet general FEA scholarship eligibility requirements.
Explore the World Scholarship
This travel scholarship will award multiple $2000 scholarships. Students must be a US Citizen or permanent residents and demonstrate financial need to apply. Students are able to apply for the scholarship if they are traveling a minimum of seven days. The scholarship is open to students up to 30 years old.
STA Travel Scholarship
These scholarships of up to $2500 are awarded to students who are U.S. or Canadian citizens who will study abroad for a semester or summer. They strongly encourage students to apply who represent a group that is traditionally underrepresented in education abroad. Those groups include, but are not limited to minority students, first-generation college students, students with disabilities, student athletes, veterans and returning learners.

The Ashley Soule Conroy Foundation Scholarship
This scholarship awards $4,000 to undergraduate degree seeking students on semester or year study abroad programs with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA. Students must have demonstrated financial needs as determined by the FAFSA.
Foundation for Global Scholars
At the time of applying for any of the Foundation scholarships, you must be enrolled in a North American college or university where transfer credit from an academic program abroad will be applied to your degree being earned. You must be a US or Canadian citizen.
GO! Overseas Study Abroad Scholarship
GO! Overseas awards a $500 scholarship for fall, spring, and summer study abroad.
Rainbow Scholarship Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship available to LGBTQI undergraduate US Citizens who plan to study abroad for at least four weeks. Awards up to $10,000.
IIE Generation Study Abroad Travel Grants IIE makes funds available for U.S. students from a broad range of backgrounds to make it possible for them to participate in academic, internship or service-learning experiences abroad.
Rotary International
Rotary International offers grants to students planning study abroad that will include significant engagement with a foreign culture and language.
The Scott's Cheap Flights Study Abroad Scholarship This scholarship wards a $1,000 scholarship each fall and spring. The scholarship will be awarded by winning essay submission. Summer students may also apply.
The Tripping.com Scholarship This scholarship offers $1,000 scholarships to be used for study abroad.

The Bridging Scholarship
Program provides 60 scholarships to U.S. students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Recipients will receive stipends ranging from $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan.
Freeman -ASIA
Freeman-ASIA accepts applications from U.S. citizens or permanent residents studying at the undergraduate level at a two-year or four-year college or university who demonstrate financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.

ENGLAND
British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX)
Available to students studying in London. BUTEX awards eight scholarships each year to North American students studying in the UK. The value of each scholarship is £500 and is paid upon arrival at the host university.
GERMANY
The German Exchange Service
A flexible scholarship program which offers short-term scholarships for participation in summer study abroad, internships, senior thesis research or summer courses at German universities and long-term scholarships for semester or year study abroad.

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships
