We Finally Made It!

May 20, 2018

Team TanzaniaWow! We finally made it! After nearly two full days of travel we have finally reached our destination and can take some time to relax and recoup.

You can't really describe to someone the amount of excitement our group had the moment we arrived at Masumbo Lodge late last night. We landed in Dar Es Salaam Friday evening and drove two hours to Bagamoyo where we spent our first night. The lodge we stayed in was located right on the coast of the Indian Ocean. Many of us took advantage of this and got up early the next morning to swim in the ocean and hang out on the beach until it was time for breakfast. After breakfast, all eighteen of us piled onto the bus once more for a ten hour journey into rural Tanzania. We witnessed some amazing mountainous views and were able to see our first African sunset on the trip. We also noticed that in many of the regions we passed through, locals were selling fresh produce (pineapples, bananas, sugar cane, and more). This seemed to be the way in which many of the locals make a living and provide for their families.

As we got closer and closer to Masumbo Lodge, it became evident that, for many of the locals, seeing white people was not a common occurrence. The blank stares that children gave our group as we passed by made us realize that it could be the first time in their lives that they have encountered white individuals. However, our group was greeted and welcomed with so much kindness and hospitality. We are very appreciative of the Moyer family for hosting our group at Masumbo. It is clear that they are very passionate about what they do and are excited to have us here.

Today we took a zip line across the river, we hiked some nearby trails, and did some pretty intense rock climbing. Tomorrow morning we will be meeting the students for the first time and beginning our teaching!
