Visiting La Escuela

May 30, 2018

We started early today so that we could visit the previous years sites of service work. We walked to the house of the family we helped the day before, and saw the house that was built for them. We then walked to the bathroom and kitchen that students last year built for a family neighboring the El Sinche farm. The family let us hold and play with their guinea pigs (a staple of a typical Ecuadorian diet) before we headed back to the farm to take the tractor to a local school where we helped out by playing with the students, and doing yard work. I spent the day with one of our workers fixing the fence surrounding the school, while others pulled weeds, dug out the drainage ditch, mixed cement for under the children's play set, and just hung around playing with the kids getting to know them. We all ate lunch together, and then handed out a new pair of shoes to the children. Once the kids went home for the day, we talked with the two teachers who worked at the school. The school is severely underfunded, and the teachers are forced to teach multiple grades in a single classroom. They have desks facing different directions depending on what grade the students are in, so that they are facing the white board that is for their grade level. It was eye opening to be able to see how our school systems compare, and I was glad that we could offer some kind of help to make their lives and place of education a little better for them, but I still wish that there was more we could do for them.

After the school we caught a bus to Salinas, a neighboring city, where we visited a store for snacks and souvenirs (I was pretty quick to buy chocolate - nothing compares to Ecuadorian chocolate). After the store we went to a small pizzeria where we hung out for a couple hours talking and enjoying each other's company, before returning back to El Sinche for the night. Tomorrow we head off to hike Chimborazo, the tallest mountain in the world (when measured from the center of the earth out).
