Biography:
Professor Cristina Haverty presently serves as the Dean of the School of Health Sciences at Lasell University. Her tenure at Lasell began in 2000, during the initial accreditation phase of the Athletic Training Program. Over the past decade, Professor Haverty has been instrumental in leading the department through several re-accreditation processes to a successful position amongst athletic training programs in the region.

As an Athletic Training Educator, Professor Haverty's scholarly activities focus on the development of leadership and management skills in athletic training students as well as the education of athletic trainers in clinical practice who serve as preceptors for athletic training students.

Prior to joining Lasell University, Professor Haverty was the Coordinator of Sports Medicine at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Assistant Athletic Trainer at Bridgewater State University.

While at Lasell University, Professor Haverty continued to practice as Head Athletic Trainer for United States Youth Soccer Region I Girls Olympic Development Program. While with USYS she traveled throughout the U.S. and internationally to Europe, Asia and Central America. She was also an Athletic Trainer for the United States Soccer Federation. Most recently, she provides athletic training coverage for various colleges, universities and high schools in the Boston area.

What do you like about teaching at Lasell?
"What I like most about Lasell University is the support I receive from the university community as an educator and department administrator. Innovative ideas are highly encouraged and supported at Lasell."

What is your teaching philosophy for Lasell courses?
"Problem-based learning and clinical application, through active participation of students, is critical to the understanding of subject matter and the development of clinical reasoning and critical thinking."

What is important for your students to take away from your classes?
"I hope that every student enrolled in my courses leaves at the end of the semester with a positive experience. Experiences that are challenging but make each of them feel accomplished."

How does your professional background influence your time in the classroom with students?
"The best educational moments I’ve had in the classroom have come from my ability to share my experiences as a practicing athletic trainer. My experiences in the athletic training room turn the classroom’s hypothetical situations into a real case scenarios; ultimately better preparing the students for the unexpected, non-textbook medical cases that we encounter with patients in the real world."
