After receiving an undergraduate degree in business, Professor Deborah Baldizar worked at Southern Exposure, a San Francisco based Arts organization, which offers art classes to underserved city youth. During her time there she realized that art is a catalyst for personal growth and a powerful tool for communication. Professor Baldizar is passionate about all aspects of the art making process and dedicated to personally and professionally facilitating creative experiences through the intersection of art and education.

Since receiving her M.F.A., Professor Baldizar has taught at several colleges, delivered workshops and artist talks throughout New England. In addition to teaching at Lasell University, Professor Baldizar is a professional artist exhibiting her cast paper sculpture and drawings in galleries and museums throughout the country. She has been invited to numerous group and solo shows, including a two-year traveling exhibition of innovative works made in and of paper, curated by Nicholas Bell of the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.  She has recently shown her work on Martha’s Vineyard, in St. Louis, Mo., and Morristown, N.J. As an active member of the sculpture and papermaking communities she continues to make and show new artwork.

What is your teaching philosophy for Lasell courses?

“My teaching is grounded in the belief that all people are creative. Art is a tool for exercising creativity, building self-awareness and making meaning from ones experiences. My goal as an educator is for every student to discover and explore what inspires them to do great work. I ask students to step outside the familiar and embrace new ways of applying personal interests to class projects in an effort to build critical thinking and interdisciplinary connections. Through hands-on, active learning, I encourage students to examine essential questions in engaging and relevant ways, while aligning course content with the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare students for success after Lasell.”
