Dr. Dana Janbek is an internationally-focused scholar and educator. She teaches media and intercultural communication courses on the undergraduate and graduate levels. Her two research agendas focus on the Syrian refugee crisis and on terrorist use of the internet. She is fluent in Arabic.

Dr. Janbek has visited refugees in Jordan and in Germany. In addition to a book chapter, Dr. Janbek's research findings were published in a co-authored paper titled "Syrian refugees and information precarity" in New Media & Society, a top-ranked communication journal. Dr. Janbek worked on "The Faces of Syrian Refugees" exhibit which was showcased at Boston's City Hall in the summer of 2017. In 2016 she organized a refugee symposium which brought to campus refugees and experts to discuss the immigration debate.  

Dr. Janbek's research on the use of the Internet by terrorist groups looks at how they communicate, plan, and recruit online. In addition to a number of journal articles, she has a co-authored book titled Global terrorism and new media: The post Al-Qaeda generation published by Routledge.    

Professor Janbek has been teaching at Lasell College since 2009; prior to her time here, she worked as an instructor at the University of Miami School of Communication in Coral Gables, FL. Her professional background includes time at World Communities of Louisville, INC. in Louisville, KY, and at the Embassy of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Janbek has co-developed and co-led several international service learning trips focused on ecotourism to Brazil and to Belize. She has also co-developed and led a communication academic trip to Washington, DC

What is important for your students to take away from your classes?:

I would like students to leave the class with a deep understanding of how course content connects to local and global issues of importance, and how their knowledge can be used to think through the greatest challenges facing our world today.

Dr. Janbek has frequently done media interviews on her research areas of expertise. She has appeared on various media outlets across the country including BBC Radio 5, CNN, FOX25, The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, The Christian Science Monitor, Voice of America, WBZ1030 News Radio, WRKO, WHDH Channel 7, WJAR/NBC 10, NECN. Her op-eds are published by WBUR's Cognoscenti and The Hill

Dr. Janbek presents her research regularly at communication conferences, most often at the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) conference. Additionally, she has been invited to give dozens of presentations on her research at academic institutions including at Boston College, Boston University, Northeastern University, Tufts University, College of Holy Cross, Worcester State University, Roger Williams University, Roxbury Community College, Massasoit Community College, and Bristol Community College.
