War and Fashion? Lasell Team Makes the Connection

May 24, 2011

Can war be fashionable? Armed conflict and mainstream fashion may appear to be diametrically opposed, yet military style continues to have significant impact on contemporary attire. Associate Professor of Fashion Jill Carey and a team of Lasell Fashion Merchandising students have created a comprehensive exhibit that illustrates this correlation.

Frontline Fashion: An Exhibit of Material Culture and the Military-opening with a reception to the public on Wednesday, May 25 from 6:30-8:30pm at the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation, 154 Moody Street in Waltham-examines the ironic counterpoint between war, fashion and pop culture. Focusing on the Vietnam, Gulf and Iraq Wars, the relationship between military attire and civilian dress --from standard issue khaki pants to pricey Titanium dog tags-is explored in the powerful exhibit.

"The fashion world continues to replicate particular trends in the form of materials, innovations and silhouettes from the United States military," Professor Carey says. "Military and fashion styles have had strong bonds during the course of warfare h history."

Eliza Fitzgerald '11 co-curated Frontline Fashion with Professor Carey and Fashion Merchandising undergraduates Rhonda Jaber, Melissa Kenny, Maria Rogers and Brittany Leone.
