Veterans and Aging the Focus at Talk of Ages Summit

June 20, 2016

Researchers, educators, public policymakers, community leaders, government representatives, practitioners and others will gather on campus for the second annual Talk of Ages Summit, an event focused on life course outcomes with specific emphasis this year on veterans. The meeting will be held in Winslow Academic Center on June 27.

Veterans Engaging Aging, an all-day meeting hosted by Lasell's RoseMary B. Fuss Center for Research on Aging and Intergenerational Studies, will "explore a positive re-envisioning of life course outcomes for Massachusetts veterans of military service as well as new options for engagement in later life," says Joann Montepare, director of the Fuss Center. "Last year, we had over 100 participants and we expect an even more robust turnout this year."

Opening remarks and introductions will kick off the morning session, with a welcome from Montepare and Lasell's Vice President of Academic Affairs James Ostrow. Past Massachusetts Secretary of Veterans' Services Coleman Nee, Massachusetts Secretary of Veterans' Services Francisco Urena and Massachusetts Secretary of Elder Affairs Alice Bonner will join in welcoming attendees beginning at 9am.

Michele Karel, psychogeriatrics coordinator of Mental Health Services for the state Department of Veterans Affairs, will deliver the keynote address, "Veterans Aging: Strength and Resilience," at 9:45am. Beginning at 10:30am, Dan Berlowitz, professor of Health Policy and Management at the Boston University School of Public Health, will moderate a panel discussion on veterans' topics with panelists Catherine Kang, director of Encore Boston Network, who will focus on issues of work and volunteering; Anne Doyle, president of Lasell Village and vice president for Lasell Village at Lasell College, who will discuss veterans' housing and lifelong engagement; and David Merson, director of Veterans Upward Bound at UMass/Boston, who will speak on veterans and education.

An audience discussion will follow at 12noon, after which a lunch and afternoon networking session are scheduled.

The Talk of Ages Summit is sponsored by Bridgewater State University, Encore Boston Network, RetirementJobs.com, Mature Caregivers and Massachusetts Gerontology Association. To register for the Summit, go to https:www.surveymonkey.com/r/NB28W2H or contact Montepare at jmontepare@lasell.edu.
