When a class of Lasell College seniors wanted to know more about the experiences of the area's homeless population, Lasell Professor Sharyn Lowenstein went to the source.

Lowenstein contacted the directors of the Community Day Center of Waltham and together they came up with a collaborative, community-service inspired project for the class.

As part of their honors capstone class, the students met with guests of the Day Center to discuss homelessness and to plan and produce a photography exhibit. Both students and photographers were asked to consider, "What is the experience of the Day Center guest in living every day?"

The exhibit, "Homelessness From Our Eyes," opens Friday, Nov. 5 at the art gallery of the First Presbyterian Church of Waltham and will be on public display in November and December. It showcases the photography of five Day Center guests who were asked to document their personal experience with homelessness.

"Being homeless is not a comfortable situation; it's frustrating," said photographer Ron McCann. "I think society is desensitized to a lot of this stuff."

"The photography opportunity allowed me to remember all the places I've walked and how different the terrain is. I've found there is even beauty in the things that don't seem so beautiful," said photographer Jeannie Redman.

The exhibit will be on public display on November 12th from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., November 13th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., December 10th 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and December 11th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the art gallery of First Presbyterian Church of Waltham, located at 34 Alder St.

Lasell public relations writing students also participated in the project producing promotional materials for the exhibit under the guidance of Lasell adjunct professor Becky W. Evans.

"Working with the Day Center has certainly helped us understand homelessness and near homelessness more broadly and more deeply," said Lowenstein, the director of the Center for Community-Based Learning at Lasell.

The Community Day Center of Waltham is the only day shelter in the MetroWest region. The drop-in center supports the homeless and those in need with legal, health, housing and job search assistance. It also provides "guests" with food, shelter and access to phones, computers and a mailing address.
