Profs. Athey and Frey to Discuss Torture and the Constitution

September 17, 2014

On the occasion of Constitution Day, which celebrates the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, two professors will hold a panel discussion this evening regarding the use of torture, human rights and the relationship to the U.S. founding document.

U.S. government documents show that after 9/11, many hundreds of people were abused or tortured by the CIA and Department of Defense, primarily in Afghanistan, Guantánamo, and Iraq, but also in other countries after unlawful rendition.

Professor Stephanie Athey, who has researched and written about our country's use of torture, and Professor Denny Frey, who teaches the College's Humans Rights course will discuss:  Why democracies torture? and when? How does this tie in to our history, to the War on Terror, to our future? and How do we respond?

The event will be held at 7 pm in Rosen Auditorium.
