Lasell’s Undefeated Rugby Club Set for Playoffs This Weekend
October 25, 2011
In its most successful season to date, the Lasell College Men's Rugby Club has gone undefeated in its division this Fall, bolstered by the memory of its beloved captain Jimmy Curtis.
The club, now in its third year, prepares to host its first-ever playoff game this weekend as the third seed against sixth-seed Champlain College on Sunday, October 30th at 1 pm on Grellier Field.
For many of the club's 35 team members, the journey to this moment began three years ago, as freshmen and sophomores, when the club was born. This year they remember that beginning and also honor their former teammate and captain, Jimmy Curtis, who died earlier this semester following a tragic accident.
"The biggest reason why we all are playing so much harder this season is the loss of our captain. He is the reason we have done as well as we have," said Ryan Rezendes, the club's current President.
That superior play has led the Lasell club to handily beat the likes of Brandeis (49-17), Rhode Island College (27-7), University of New England (42-17), Framingham State (23-17), and Mitchell College (64-0) this season as part of the Southern Conference of the New England Rugby Football Union Division IV.
The past three years have been a bruising exercise as the Lasell men learned the game and were tested against Division 1 teams such as Northeastern, but now they have persevered.
"When we started this team in 2009 we were almost all sophomores and freshman, which means we have been together this whole time and have grown a lot as a team," said Rezendes, now a senior. "We've really gotten better."
And, the club shows no signs of letting up this weekend as it prepares for its first play-off win.
