Lasell to Celebrate International Peace Day

September 12, 2013

This year Lasell will celebrate International Peace Day by installing a Peace Pole on the Blodgett Green September 19 at 12:30 pm.

According to Humanities Professor Edward Sieh, the peace pole will be a permanent addition to the Lasell campus. The pole will consist of eight sides depicting the phrase, "May Peace Prevail on Earth," in eight different languages.

Tens of thousands of Peace Pole Projects are located around the world in 180 countries. All display a message or prayer in a different languages on each side as a reminder to pray for and hope for world peace.

Sieh came up with the idea to install a pole on Lasell's campus with students from his Principles of Human Rights class. The class wanted the object to represent peace at Lasell.

Last fall, the students in that class brought a proposal to Lasell President Michael Alexander that was later approved by the senior management team.

The class, which conducted fundraisers and raised awareness about the pole on campus, then determined the message to be inscribed on the pole.

President Alexander Responds to the Tragedy in Orlando  Thursday, June 16, 2016We the people of the United States cherish our freedoms. Whether it be the freedom to say what we want, to assemble in groups of our choosing, to follow the religions of our choice, to vote as our conscience demands, to own and carry weapons, to start new businesses and make money, and to move about as we please -- these are values we hold dear and are reluctant to compromise.
