Lasell Student Plans to Speak in DC for Blood Donation Policy Changes

November 10, 2014

Lasell College Sophomore, Jay Franzone, will be traveling to Washington DC on November 13 to participate in a Health and Human Services Advisory Committee Meeting on Blood & Tissue Safety & Availability. At this meeting he will speak in support of policy changes that would allow gay and bisexual men to donate blood.

Franzone plans to share with the HHS committee his story of frustration in 2012 when he couldn't give blood to save his uncle who needed a transfusion.

This experience led to Franzone's involvement in the National Gay Blood Drive, which was held this summer to highlight the policy that prevents gay and bisexual men from donating blood.

"It's an opportunity I have been waiting for to comment on the ban and to share my thoughts on why this policy should change," said Franzone.

Franzone plans to speak during the public comment session of the hearing.
