Lasell Small Business Institute Awards Grants to Budding Entrepreneurs

A social media/live streaming platform, a website featuring artwork and custom designed apparel and a new sports website for the Boston fan. These are the winning ideas in the Lasell Small Business Institute's Test Your Big Idea competition.

The Lasell Small Business Institute holds an entrepreneurship competition for undergraduates each year and selects between two and three winning ideas to receive test grants ranging from $1,000 to $2,000.

The most recent Test Your Big Idea competition was held just before Thanksgiving with three student teams selected from 15 submissions:

I - Adfectu - A commerce website showcasing artwork and custom designed apparel and other items proposed by student Nick Iby - Faculty Mentor Professor Stanley Buchin - Award of $1,500 .

II - Boston Babble. com - An online source for Boston sports talk with the goal to provide in-depth Boston sports news by fans, for fans proposed by student Ryan Cutter - Faculty Mentor Visiting Professor Matthew Reilly - Award of $1,000.

III - LiveTime - A multi-sided web platform that integrates a social media experience with live streaming proposed by students Maurice Williams and John Castro - Faculty Mentor Professor Bruce McKinnon - Award of $1,000.

Each of the recipients received 50% of their award in a recent ceremony with Vice President for Academic Affairs, Jim Ostrow and faculty. The balance of the award will be paid after a review of expenses and receipts of the initial grant.

In the interim, each of the award winners will received assistance in business planning, high speed internet access, peer-to-peer networking and three months of mentoring and coaching.
