Lasell College and Mohegan Sun Massachusetts Develop Educational Partnership

August 12, 2014

Lasell College and Mohegan Sun Massachusetts LLC have entered into an agreement to provide internships and field experiences for students and appropriate management-level job opportunities for the College's Hospitality and Resort and Casino Management graduates. In turn, Mohegan Sun employees will receive management and customer service training from Lasell faculty and have access to discounted courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.

The Memorandum of Understanding between the two entities is designed to support the development of entry-level management personnel for the Commonwealth's burgeoning casino industry. Launched in 2014, the Newton, Massachusetts-based College's Resort and Casino Management major is only one of three such programs of study across the country.

"Since its inception, our Resort and Casino Management program has attracted strong, motivated students to Lasell. With input from Mohegan Sun senior staff, we will produce job-ready candidates for positions throughout the resort and casino industry," said Lasell College President Michael B. Alexander. "Mohegan Sun employees will also benefit from this collaboration, which will include a variety of professional development and academic opportunities."

The Memorandum of Understanding, which was entered into August 4, 2014, will become effective if Mohegan Sun is successful in obtaining a casino license in Revere, Mass. The agreement reflects the College's Connected Learning educational philosophy which promotes experiential learning both within and outside the classroom.

"Mohegan Sun Massachusetts will generate thousands of new jobs that provide tremendous opportunities for career growth and advancement," said Mitchell Etess, CEO of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority. "Colleges such as Lasell play a critical role in providing this new industry with a job-ready workforce, and we are excited to enter into this partnership that will enable students and employees to gain valuable skills and experience."

In addition to workforce training, the agreement also calls for the involvement of Mohegan Sun executives in curriculum development for Lasell's Resort and Casino Management major and support in expanding the College's Hospitality Management program. Lasell will offer a 10% discount to Mohegan Sun employees wishing to complete a bachelor's degree in Hospitality or pursue a graduate degree, including the Master of Science in Management with a Hospitality and Event Management concentration.
