Lasell Alum, Considered the 5th Marathon Bombing Victim, is Honored

September 18, 2015

Fallen Boston Police Officer and Lasell alum D.J. Simmonds '08 was honored this week when his name was added to the Boston Police Department's memorial for officers who died in the line of duty.

Simmonds was one of the first law enforcement officers on the scene in Watertown on April 19, 2013 when Boston Marathon bombers and brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev engaged in a shootout with police days after they attacked bystanders at the race.

A year after Simmonds sustained injuries during the Watertown shootout, he collapsed and died at the Boston Police Academy gym. Many, including his family, believe he died as a result of those injuries.

Earlier this year the state retirement board recognized that Simmonds died in the line of duty, awarding his family $150,000 as a one time line-of-duty benefit.

Lasell has also created a schorlarship in his honor.
