Hospitality Department Launches Distinguished Speaker Series

February 06, 2015

In an effort to build a network between the Hospitality industry and Lasell students, the Hospitality and Event Management Department has launched a new speaker series for Hospitality, Casino Management and Event Management majors and minors.

A speaker from the hospitality industry is scheduled every Monday this semester, and students enrolled in certain courses may gain either 1 credit or 3 credits for their participation.

The series' first speaker John D. Murtha, general manager of the Omni Parker House Hotel in Boston, is scheduled for Monday, February 9.

Murtha, an industry veteran, has been in the hospitality business for 39 years, 20 of which were spent working with the Sonesta International Hotels Corporation. In those two decades, he worked in various locations, in and out of the U.S., and served as Sonesta's corporate director of advertising.

Since 2007, Murtha has been the general manager at the Omni Parker House hotel, the longest continuously operating hotel in the United States. Since 2001, John has also served as an adjunct professor at Boston University's School of Hospitality Administration. He also is the recipient of an American Hotel & Lodging Association State Leadership Award for his work with the Massachusetts Lodging Association.
