Lasell's RoseMary B. Fuss Center for Research on Aging and Intergenerational Studies has received a $5000 grant to launch a major educational summit addressing aging in society and its impact on colleges and universities in Massachusetts.

The Talk of Ages Summit, which will be held June 8, 2015 at Lasell, is supported by a grant from the Association for Psychological Science through its fund for Teaching and Public Understanding of Psychological Science.

"The Summit will cultivate a network of educators across the state committed to teaching about aging and age-diversity and invested in intergenerational exchange," said Joann Montepare, Director of the Fuss Center and a Professor of Psychology at Lasell.

The summit will bring together educators from across Massachusetts to explore the implications of aging in higher education, discuss a vision of gerontological literacy, and learn about new strategies for integrating aging content and intergenerational activities into courses.

According to Montepare, the summit also aims to serve as a catalyst and model for initiatives in other states.

"I hope it can motivate broader discussions about age-friendly college campuses and how intergenerational efforts can help support educational goals," she added.

Montepare intends for disciplines beyond psychology to be represented at the summit by asking participants to extend summit invitations to colleagues in a different area.

"An important element in aging education is that it should not be delegated simply to courses on ‘aging'," said Montepare.

Going forward hopes are to establish a working network of educators to share best practices and work with their host institutions to lay the foundation for a statewide plan around aging education.
