Congressman Joe Kennedy Meets with Poli Sci Class

April 22, 2015

"If you can think creatively and solve problems, you'll succeed in any field."
So said Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy III (D-MA) to a group of Lasell students on Friday, April 17. Kennedy, a guest speaker at Assistant Professor Paul DeBole's Political Science class, engaged the students gathered around the Stoller Room conference table in an informal conversation about the realities of representing the 4th District of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives-an area that stretches from the western suburbs of Boston to the state's South Coast and serves 730,000 citizens.
The biggest challenge? "Getting people to have faith in the system," the Congressman said. "Cutting through today's media/technological explosion to reach people. Right now, we can't come close to the number of cat memes on BuzzFeed." The biggest reward? "Being able to leverage the power of the federal government to actually help people locally."
During a question-and-answer exchange, DeBole's students raised concerns about topical issues including climate change and terrorism.
Elected to Congress in 2012, Kennedy is a graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School and was an Assistant District Attorney in the Commonwealth for several years before running for office.
