College Mock Trial Team Competes in Regional Tournament

February 18, 2016

Lasell's Mock Trial Team won respectable marks at the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) regional tournament held at Boston College earlier this month, while Lasell Senior and team captain Rachel Matos won the Regional Attorney Award at the competition with a perfect 20 score.

Lasell was among 24 New England college teams competing in the February 13-14 event and ended the tournament with a 4-4 record, beating teams from Bryant College and Stonehill College, but losing to Brandeis University and UMass-Lowell.

Each team received identical sets of trial materials in August 2015 and was required to conduct a total of four trials over the course of the weekend. With the score, Lasell's team narrowly missed a bid to AMTA's Opening Round Championship Series in Wilmington, DE on March 20.

According to Professor Steven Rosenthal, who advises and coaches the group, Matos, a three-year mock trial veteran, is the first Lasell student to win the Regional Attorney Award and was one of only five students from the entire competition (72 students) to achieve the honor.

Rosenthal also reported that coaches from Stonehill and UMass-Lowell stated they were impressed with the Lasell team's performance during the event.

Seniors competing at the regional tournament were Matos, Danielle Hottin, Zach Gavin, Yelitza Santana, and Julia Wolchko.
