College Hosts Fresh Check Day - A Mental Health Awareness Fair

April 06, 2016

Fresh Check Day - an expo-like event to bring awareness to the Lasell community about student mental health and suicide prevention - will take place on Friday, April 8 from noon to 3 pm at de Witt Hall. The wellness fair will feature interactive booths, resource tables, free food, entertainment, prizes and a hands-on farm animal exhibit.

Fresh Check Day is an innovative concept created by the Jordan Porco Foundation, founded in 2011 by Ernie and Marisa Porco after they lost their son, Jordan, to suicide when he was a freshman in college. The foundation, based in Connecticut, is committed to preventing suicide in high school and college through awareness, education, and innovative programming.

This is the first such event at Lasell, which is organized by the College's Counseling Center and Health Education Office with collaborating agencies Metro West Regional Coalition for Suicide Prevention and Call2Talk of the United Way of Tri-County, Lasell campus departments and student volunteers.

"This fair combines fun activities with a serious message about college student mental health - educating and supporting one another in our Lasell community. It's part of a larger movement with Fresh Check Day coming to other colleges to increase awareness around suicide prevention, and supporting peers," said Janice Fletcher, the Counseling Center Director.
