The Barn Deconstruction
The Building & Grounds Barn, originally scheduled to be demolished in preparation for the construction of the new Donahue Center for Creative and Applied Arts, was instead deconstructed by The ReStore Inc., a division of the western Massachusetts nonprofit Center for Ecological Technology.
The Barn deconstruction began in June 2010. Lasell worked with ReStore Inc. to make sure any reusable materials found a home.
The asphalt shingles on the Barn will be recycled as road base in New Hampshire, and the building's framing, cabinetry, and windows will be reused by ReStore.
Miscellaneous materials including metal and vinyl were recycled, and much of the clean wood from the Barn will be reused as mulch.
Overall, the Barn deconstruction had a total of 45.23 tons of materials that were saved for reuse or recycling, which is about 83% of the original structure.
