Panel Discussion: War on Poverty
The War on Poverty: Where are we 50 years later?
Tuesday, November 18, 20142:00 P.M. - 3:00 P.M. Yamawaki Auditorium
Fifty years ago during his State of the Union address, U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson announced legislation known informally as the War on Poverty. Professors Jenifer Drew (Sociologist), Dennis Frey (Historian) and Aaron Toffler (Environmental Policy) will reflect on poverty and wealth in Massachusetts fifty years later, touching on the impact of attitudes and policies on the poor, and on different races and ethnic groups – incarceration, education, environmental justice and more.
Aaron Toffler has represented community groups in urban environmental issues including land use, open space and development issues. Jenifer Drew is involved in prison education and ex-offender community integration. Dennis Frey studies how historians and social scientists in general view socio-economic and cultural change over time.
