Lasell College Adds Varsity Baseball to its Athletic Roster
Newton, MA -- Lasell College will introduce baseball to its roster of athletics beginning in the 2007-2008 season as a club sport and plans to move the team to varsity status for the 2009 season, said Kristy Walter, director of Athletics at the coeducational college that enrolls some 1200 plus students.
“Lasell College has reached an agreement with neighboring Brandeis University to share its baseball field for practice and games beginning in the fall of 2007,” she said. “Lasell will have access to the field, which will include lights and an artificial surface, six-days-a-week, for both the traditional and non-traditional season.” In return, Lasell, which owns the only boat house on the upper Charles River, will share its facility with the Brandeis crew program.
Baseball will become the 13th varsity sport sponsored at the NCAA Division III institution and the sixth team sport for men. The baseball team will compete in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), which includes, among other institutions, Emerson College and Suffolk University.
“We are pleased to enter into a relationship of support and mutual benefit with Brandeis University –- an institution that is some five miles away from us in Waltham,” said Lasell President Thomas E.J. de Witt. “Such cooperative ventures are advantageous for both institutions and offer our respective students expanded resources that increase the value of their college experiences.”
In addition to baseball, Lasell sponsors men's basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, and volleyball and women's basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball and volleyball. The Division III College is also a member of the ECAC, and the North Atlantic Conference.
Lasell College’s athletic program provides student-athletes with the opportunity to develop and display their skills and talents through collegiate-level competition. At Lasell, athletics are an integral part of a comprehensive educational experience that encourages each individual to reach for his or her potential, both on and off the field.
