Village Voices: Milton Landowne, William Silverstein and Grace Glanz Hasenbush
Grace Glanz Hasenbush, Milton Landown and William Silverstein each attributes some credit for their longevity to the quality of life they enjoy at Lasell Village. Here, a tribute to this remarkable triumvirate.
Milton Landowne was born in the Bronx, has five children "and many grandchildren." His celebrated medical career focused on understanding the causes of vascular disease, an area in which he is highly published. A Harvard Medical School graduate, Landowne taught at the University of Chicago Medical School, was chief of cardio research at VA Hospital in Washington, DC, assistant chief of gerontology at the NIH National Heart Institute and director of the medical sciences division of the US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick, MA. He continues to indulge a lifelong fascination with mushrooms. Landown cherishes the Village as "a comfortable and safe place to live."
William Silverstein, a Philadelphia native, graduated from Temple University Dental School at age 22, served as a dentist with a US Army combat unit during World War II and remained an active Army Reservist for 20 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He set up a dental practice and raised his family in Johnstown, PA. A widower for 40 years, Silverstein has two daughters in the area, Deborah in Cambridge and Barbara in Sharon, and a son, Evan, in Philadelphia. As for his Lasell Village life? "I love everything about it and would not want to be anywhere else."
Grace Glanz Hasenbush relocated to the Village on the advice of a friend and has never looked back. A native New Yorker and a social worker by profession, she has a BA in Art from New York University and took course work toward a master's at Columbia University. She has two sons and two granddaughters. An active Democrat all her life, she is "starting a project to add a new wing of opportunity to the Democratic Party which will help poor people." What's best about Lasell Village for her? "The courses are one of my main loves, and I am lucky to have wonderful friends here."
