Emily Kennedy MSM '12

Recruiter and HR pro

Recent alum Emily Makin Kennedy is a recruiter/human resources generalist for The Ironside Group, Inc., a business intelligence and data warehousing consulting firm. Kennedy specializes in recruiting consultants for Ironside's regional offices while simultaneously handling all HR responsibilities, including orientation, benefits administration, compensation and employee relations. She holds a BA in Psychology and Management from Assumption College. Like many working professionals attracted to Lasell's graduate programs, Kennedy was employed in her field (in HR at Crosspoint Engineering) while pursuing her master's degree. Leaves caught up with the South Walpole, MA resident between meetings on a typically busy day at Ironside's Lexington, MA headquarters.

What attracted you to Lasell's graduate program?

I was looking for a program where the focus could be HR management rather than a general overview of business management. I wanted to learn more about HR law, change management, organizational behavior and other areas. Lasell's focus was on target for me.

What was your academic experience like?

The amazingly talented professors were themselves working professionals who lived and breathed HR. I was able to ask them real-life questions pertaining to my current role (and potential future strategies), and I benefitted from the wisdom I received in return. As the program grew, the administrative staff remained supportive and open to new value-added ideas to further advance the academic experience.

How did the program help you advance your already-successful career?

After going through the program, I realized I was ready to expand my professional responsibilities but also be more of a thought leader in the industry. I enjoy both sides of my role, managing recruiting and the HR components of the organization, but I am also an avid player in our growth strategy.

What are your hobbies/passions?

Hanging out with my family and friends, painting and crafts, and watching re-runs of Friends.

Speaking as former president of the Lasell College Graduate Student Union (2010-2012), why is it important for graduate alums to and support Lasell?

I am grateful for the educational experience Lasell gave me. When you ‘give back' by supporting the growing graduate program, you can say you helped something special!
