Gearing up for Belize

May 20, 2014

Gearing up for a weeklong International Service-Learning trip to Belize.

Professor Dana Janbek and I are heading to Beliize with ten students in mid-May. The trip is part of the Shoulder-to-Shoulder service-learning programs provided by Lasell College.

In order to take part in the trip, students must be enrolled in Lasell's Ecotourism course, which was taken during the Spring semester. Students will complete their research work and projects while in Belize before receiving their final grades. (These students were competitively selected after an application and interview to take part in this course.)

During the trip, students will be staying in camping quarters where they will be, in some cases, having dinner over a campfire, sleeping on bunks in modest cabins, and using eco-friendly, composting outhouses.

In preparation for their trip, students have learned about the Belize environment, endangered species living there, and the dangers of tourism in the country.

Our trip departs on Wednesday, May 21st and returns on Wednesday, May 28th.  On the trip our students will be volunteering with a number of non-profit and government organizations in order to both contribute to building a sustainable tourism infrastructure and learn hands-on about the subject that they have been studying for the past semester.
