Hospitality & Event Management Internships
The Hospitality and Event Management Program is designed to prepare students for management positions and leadership roles in the Hospitality Industry. Emphasis is placed on customer service as a major component in the hospitality industry. The linkage among quality service, lodging, recreation development, travel and tourism, event planning and food service are stressed. Student learning is further reinforced by Connected Learning opportunities on campus as well as valuable on-the-job experiences through a mandatory senior level internship.
Below are some examples of the experiences students had with their Hospitality and Event Management Internships:
Jeffrey A. '07 | Courtyard by Marriott, Waltham, MA.
Jeffrey started out as a Guest Service Agent and before the end of his internship was hired as a full time employee. “In all, this has been a great experience in the hotel industry. I went through many different things to achieve and exceed through this process…the actual job taught me how to work with people that are both my co-workers and guests. It worked out so well that they offered me a full time job for the summer with chances to move up in the corporation. ….it was by far the best and most productive I have done here in my four years at Lasell College.”

This was an incredible internship as Kyle developed great interpersonal skills. “At the end of the summer, my manager was very pleased with my work and quick learning capabilities. Also my decision making under pressure situations. He admired how I was always cool, calm, and collected and never buckled under pressure, or let a rude member get under my skin. He was pleased with the way I would speak to the members. I was never rude or sarcastic. I was friendly and accommodating and always tried to go that extra step to serve the members.”

Erika is now the student representative for Walt Disney World at Lasell College. “... I worked with Disney’s special events department. I learned a tremendous amount from working for this company. The training that the company offers is world renowned. Throughout my experience, I learned the true meaning of customer service, which is key in pretty much any business but especially the Hospitality Industry. I feel like the situations which I encountered at Disney, really prepared me for the real world because there are some situations that you cannot make up and you really don’t learn how to handle them until you are faced with them.”

Amy E. '06 | Boston Marriott in Newton, MA.
Amy interned in the dining room. She became supervisor for the Dining services and continued to work for them part time. After graduation she became a full time employee and presently is manager of dining services for Marriott in San Diego, CA
Pierlyne G. '07 | Sheraton Needham Hotel, Needham, MA.
Located in the heart of the business center in Needham. Pierlyne worked as a night auditor. She balanced all the checks for the outlets for the previous night and balanced the cash flow for the hotel. “This internship was a real eye opener for me. ..It makes me realize how hard it is to work for a hotel. This experience has made me understand the guidelines of running a hotel. It is not an easy job. It requires long hours and hard work.”
Jessica O. '08 | Manpower, Inc., Andover, MA.
“I learned many things while working at the staffing agency, Manpower, as my internship for this past semester. Even though staffing may seem like it does not directly relate to my major, Hospitality and Event Management, in reality it does. There were numerous occasions throughout my four months in the Manpower office that we had orders come in that were related to the hospitality field. Manpower also helped me to understand how recruiting and other human resource tasks work. This internship allowed me to learn new skills, and even enhance old skills that I already had previously obtained….My internship also helped me decide on some future plans. It encouraged me to go on and work at getting my masters degree in Human Resource Management. I hope to one day integrate both degrees, and become a Human Resources Director at a large hotel.
